Artist's Background

Scott in the workshop

For as long as I can remember I've had a passionate interest in woodworking, design, and engineering. I have also been very fortunate to have many outstanding mentors and teachers who have supported my growth and shared their knowledge with me along the way.

My work with Gib Taylor at Marlboro College opened my mind to everything. Gib encouraged me to be inquisitive and taught me how to nurture my creativity in a humble and playful way. I am especially grateful to Gib for introducing me to the many pleasures of building musical instruments.

In 1992 I had the pleasure to apprentice with studio furniture artist Roger Heitzman. Roger exposed me to a level of technical expertise and creative expression that I never imagined was possible. There isn't a day in the shop that I don't somehow draw from Roger's teachings.

Following my apprenticeship, I spent a year at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Colorado. As a Summer Workshop Assistant I had the good fortune to work with a diverse group of talented instructors and many enthusiastic students. Then as an Artist in Residence I had the opportunity to immerse myself in my furniture projects and begin developing a body of work in my own personal style.

While at Marlboro College I also studied with master luthier Michael Gurian, and following my graduation I worked as a shop foreman at Gurian Guitars. Through this connection I began a lifelong fellowship with Michael Millard of Froggy Bottom Guitars. Michael and his partner Andy Mueller are a steady source of encouragement and guidance in my quest to expand my practice of lutherie.

Needless to say none of this would be possible without the unwavering support of my family, friends, and colleagues. Their encouragement nurtures my soul, bolsters my confidence, and empowers my will to create.

This site is dedicated to my Dad who was the first person to show me the great joy of working with my hands.
